Radha Kund Govardhan-Timings, Darshan, Sacred Places, and Pilgrimage Tips

Introduction

To devotees of Lord Krishna and Radharani, Radha Kund and Govardhan Hill are of the utmost significance. Upon arriving at Govardhan in Uttar Pradesh, arrive directly at Radha Kund—as it is the most sacred bathing place of all. Radha Kund is traditionally thought to have emerged by the means of Radharani's tears. When Radharani cried at the sight of Krishna lifting Govardhan Hill, her tears formed Radha Kund. Back in India, all pilgrims specifically come to Radha Kund to bathe and to receive blessings. Close to Radha Kund is Govardhan Hill, which stands as a living testament to Krishna's divine leelas—the most famous of which is the Govardhan Leela where Krishna lifted the hill to protect the villagers in Braj. Both Radha Kund and Govardhan Hill are integral sites for devotees of Radha and Krishna, attracting pilgrims day and night—filling the site. Checking out Radha Kund and Govardhan is more than just visiting a site—it's a divine experience that connects the atma to divine lovey.

The History of Radha Kund

  1. Shyama Kund and Radha Kund are two of the holiest water bodies of the entire Braj region, located in Govardhan, on the outskirts of Mathura. These two are intimately connected with the divine love between Radha and Krishna and they have a rich history that comes from a mighty leela described in ancient scriptures like the Padma Purana and especially in Gaudiya Vaishnava faith and texts.

  1. According to the legend, after Lord Krishna killed the demon, Aristasura (who appeared in the form of a bull), Srimati Radharani and Her sakhis chastised Krishna for committing a sin because it is considered impure to kill a bull. Thus, to cleanse Himself, Krishna kicked the earth, and created Shyama Kund, filling it with the waters of all of the holy rivers. In turn, Radharani and her friends dug the nearest kund with their bangles, and all of the rivers appeared to fill it, Radha Kund.

  1. Shyama Kund certainly represents Krishna's service to Radharani, while Radha Kund represents the top-most position of Radharani in devotional life. Today, those two kunds form the basis of Govardhan Parikrama, and are regarded as the highest sacred bathing places for Gaudiya Vaishnavas.
