Who is Khatu Shyam Ji- The Myth Behind the God


  1. According to believers, Khatu Shyam Ji is the reincarnation of Barbarik, the grandson of Bhima, one of the five Pandavas from the great epic Mahabharata. Barbarik was a valorous warrior who had taken a vow that he would always support the weaker side in any battle. He had three mighty arrows and kept himself ready to join the war of Mahabharata.

Before entering the battlefield, Barbarik met Lord Krishna who, knowing that Barbarik's vow could be a reason for never-ending war informed him about the sacrifice of his head which was a condition laid down for maintaining balance in the war. Barbarik agreed to this offer and without any second thought gave away his head.


  1. Pleased with the devotion shown to him, Krishna granted a boon that in Kaliyuga, he would be worshiped as Shyam, which also means Krishna. His head was eventually found in Khatu village city of Rajasthan and there stands the temple of Khatu Shyam Ji now.
